The Garmin Rino 650 is a waterproof FRS/GMRS radio plus GPS navigator that adds a barometric altimeter, 3-axis electronic compass that tells you what direction you're headed (already tilt-compensated) , and offers the NOAA weather radio (gives weather updates). It would be pretty tough to ever be lost again! With its high-sensitivity GPS receiver, Rino 650 locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. Like the rest of the Rino series, Rino 650 offers a unique Position Reporting feature. Position Reporting lets you send your exact location to other Rino users in your group so that everyone can see your position on the map page. And, because Rino is a standard FRS/GMRS radio, you can use it to communicate with any other conventional FRS/GMRS radio around. Rino 650 boasts a whopping 5 watts of transmit power (GMRS), which lets you contact others from up to 20 miles away (line of sight). In Canada though, you can transmit at 2 watts over GMRS only. We personally tested the range in Baja and were very impressed with the clear reception while talking. I was even inside a house (walls) while my partner was at a Rancho (walls again) 4 miles away with perfect transmission. Very impressive.
Other Rino 650 features:
-
1. Storage for the Baja GPS Guidebook: 2000 waypoints/ 200 Routes / 200
-
track logs - that's awesome!
-
4. Bold 65k color TFT transflective display (not touch-screen)
-
5. MicroSD card capable (not included)
-
6. Fully able to upload maps to this GPS
-
6. Wireless unit-to-unit data transfers
-
7. Rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 14 hours of outdoor use
We love the Rino series GPS with only one exception: the screen size is smaller than we would like; there's no way around this issue, but Wow do we love the multi-function of Radio, Seeing your friends (using a Rino) on your display, and the increased amount of routes, waypoints, and tracklogs all together in one GPS!
**REMEMBER: There needs to be 2 people with a Rino in order to see/track each others position on your map, however, you can communicate with ANY FRS/GMRS radio.
