For outdoor and water sports enthusiasts who want to run with the best, the rugged GPSMAP 78S features a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter, crisp color mapping, a high-sensitivity receiver, new molded rubber side grips, plus a microSD™ card slot for loading additional maps. And it floats!
I always was and still am a 76Csx lover for off road applications (like the 78 the 76 was also a marine GPS) and this is its predecessor. If they still made the 76Csx, I'd by 5 more, but before you make your decision.... check out the Montana 650 ....... They had me at 'bigger screen size'. The decision here is: touch screen or no touch screen? That IS the question.
The only difference between the 78S and the 78Sc is that the S has no preloaded maps. The Sc offers a preloaded US Coastal Map, which doesn't help much in off-road applications, so save the bucks and load the Baja E32 or Baja Nav Map (also offered on this site).
